Commissioners of the company started selling stock in April 1865 in order to raise the money to buy land and build the planned railroad from Pana to Springfield, Illinois. Gen. John A. McClernand, who was chosen chairman of the first meeting, was not chosen for the board of directors. Members of the board of included Charles Matheny, George N.
